Clinical Photonics Lab (CPL)
The main objective of the Photonic Medical Technology Research Group which works in the Clinical Photonics Lab (CPL) is the research on optical technologies in biology and medicine. The working group cooperates therefore in many research projects with the University Hospital Erlangen and the research focus is based on two main visions:
- Development of a smart laser scalpel which only cuts the desired tissue in order to spread the application of the laser in the clinic.
- Diagnosis of cancer and differentiation of tissue types using optical imaging methods.
In order to reach these challenging goals, several optical modalities are investigated and tested for their usability:
- Photoacoustic Imaging
- Laser Induced Optical Breakdown Spectroscopy
- Hyperspectral imaging
- Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy
- Random Laser
- Raman Spectroscopy
The heads of the lab are Prof. Dr. med. Maximilian Waldner from the University Hospital Erlangen and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Schmidt from the Institute of Photonic Technologies.
We are always looking for motivated PhD students with good skills in optics, physics or engineering. If you are interested, you can apply to Professor Michael Schmidt at Sekretariat@lpt.uni-erlangen.de .
