As part of an international collaboration with Universities in Trento and Jena, SAOT Member Martin Wimmer and coworkers observed topology effects in an optical fiber system. As the researchers reported in Nature Physics wave packets moving through a fiber network are influenced by its topology expresses by the Berry curvature, which the researches could reconstruct based on extremely precise measurements of pulse arrival times. While similar effects have been observed in other physical settings, it is the first time that the effect of Berry curvature could be quantified for an optical system.
